The climax of the Nem Thuong Festival features a slow public slaughter of two live pigs.
Sadly, this year, the festival went ahead as planned. However, in response to the enormous amount of national and international condemnation, Vietnam’s Prime Minister announced that there would be an end to “old fashioned, superstitious and negative” festivals – a clear reference to Nem Thuong. With an online poll saying 79% of Vietnamese in support of our call for an end, and senior politicians voicing their opposition, reports are suggesting that the villagers are ready to change the festival.
The debate has now become about far more than just one village – this is about animal welfare and Vietnam and we are just delighted to have so much support both nationally and internationally.
