October 8 is Giving Day for Apes - but what is it?

October 8, 2024 is the social media storm that is Giving Day for Apes!

For the last 11 years, Giving Day for Apes has been a global 24-hour virtual fundraising and awareness event that aims to spotlight the urgent needs of ape conservation efforts worldwide, bringing together passionate individuals, organizations, and sponsors dedicated to safeguarding these remarkable creatures. Over the last few years, almost USD$1 million has raised to support ape sanctuaries and rescue centers (SARCs) annually at each Giving Day for Apes!

Organized by Asia for Animals Core Member Organization Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, the annual fundraising event provides an opportunity to raise awareness, raise vital funds for welfare and conservation of apes (gorillas, bonobos, chimpanzees, orangutans and gibbons), as well as to provide capacity enhancement opportunities for SARCs globally to increase social media and sponsor engagement.

The virtual fundraising campaign is a highly interactive social media storm and take-over, as SARCs spread their message over 24-hour online, in order to raise funds for their ape care efforts and engage with potential supporters. As well as donations from sponsors, this year, there is an additional $57,000 prize pool of financial grants that SARCs can win, such as chance draws and two power hours specific to Asia on October 8th- the "Most Dollars Raised" Asia Power Hour (it's 4-5am GMT+7) and "Most Unique Donors" Power Hour (it's from 9-10pm GMT+7) amongst other social media and sponsor engagement opportunities. If you plan to donate - consider these house to maximise your contribution!

"We are thrilled to host the 2024 Giving Day for Apes, uniting people from all walks of life in our shared commitment to preserving ape populations and their habitats," said Valerie Taylor, Executive Director at Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, and Board Member of the Asia for Animals Coalition (AfA).

"With the support of our global community and longtime event sponsors, including Arcus Foundation, American Anti-Vivisection Society, David Bohnett Foundation, and the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance, we can make a profound difference in securing a brighter future for these incredible creatures."

Nine ape sanctuaries are participating from Asia this year- with most being members of the AfA Network. Here you can read about their missions and what they hope to do with funds raised this year. Use this site to search for your favorite sanctuaries and rescue centers in Asia and support them with a donation. We encourage people to also make a donation to a sanctuary or rescue center you may have not heard of before!

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), founded in 2007, is a nonprofit organization with a mission to accredit and recognize sanctuaries and rescue centers, support them to achieve the highest standards of excellence, promote collaboration, and raise awareness of their work.

Giving Day for Apes is just one of the ways GFAS  recognizes and support animal sanctuaries and rescue centers around the world. We envision a world where there are true sanctuaries for all animals who need them - and we work to educate and partner with sanctuaries and rescues around the world to help them achieve and maintain standards of excellence to make that vision a reality, day-by-day. We’re building a growing network of sanctuary staff and volunteers around the world who have the support and resources they need to provide that true sanctuary for their animals.
