On July 31st 2023, members of the Asia for Animals and Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition wrote to key policy-related figures at Meta, including Meta's Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, regarding the macaque torture and abuse content that is available on Facebook. The letter was signed by 33 animal protection organizations from around the world, calling on Meta to do more to remove this content, and those who share it, from the platform.
The letter references the recent BBC documentary that exposed the international networks of abusers creating, selling and consuming content featuring the violent torture and of macaques on social media.
"Meta must take immediate, concrete action to address monkey torture and abuse content
by substantially improving policy and moderation, immediately removing videos depicting
monkey torture, and closing down the accounts on which they appear. Meta should also
report such offenders to the authorities, especially in light of the police investigations
taking place as a result of evidence gathered from the documentary."
